Success! Albemarle BOS Votes to End Membership in ICLEI
June 08, 2011
The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors voted 4-2 to rescind membership in ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability).
This is a huge accomplishment, and a BIG THANK YOU to those who spoke at the BOS work session and/or contacted your supervisor.
This is very significant. Most of the successes of the liberty movement in the past locally have been in the form of stopping bad legislation as it is was coming down the pike, but in this case, ICLEI membership was something already on the books, since 2007.
That said, we need keep the pressure on, because a vote to withdraw from the "U.S. Cool Counties Stabilization Declaration" was delayed, and the HUD grant money for rewriting the comprehensive plan is still on the table.
Please note that Carole Thorpe and Charles Battig of the Jefferson Area Tea Party have been leading the charge on this and deserve our greatest thanks and appreciation.
Speak Out Against "Sustainable Development
Good work and thanks to those who contacted their supervisor and/or spoke at the recent Albemarle County Board of Supervisors meeting!
The Board has delayed allowing the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission (TJPDC) to take $1 million in (HUD) money (your tax money) for helping to rewrite the county comprehensive plan and include some very bad items associated with “Sustainable Development”.
Albemarle County, the City of Charlottesville, and UVA are all involved in these Orwellian programs that in large part seek to save the world from “global warming”. Charlottesville signed the "U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement" in July 2006 and Albemarle signed the "U.S. Cool Counties Stabilization Declaration" in December 2007.
Please ask your supervisor to reject any federal money for enacting these irresponsible and anti-freedom measures, break all ties with ICLEI, withdraw from the "U.S. Cool Counties Stabilization Declaration", and jettison any participation in activities related to UN Agenda 21.
So, what is so bad about “Sustainable Development”?
1) The 1998 Sustainability Accords, a local plan which was submitted by TJPDC as part of the HUD grant application says crazy things like,
It is unthinkable that this could happen in Jefferson’s Albemarle. I am assuming your jaw has dropped to the floor, but here is the next whopper:
2) The “U.S. Cool Counties” commits Albemarle County to reducing carbon emissions by 80 percent by 2050.
Now, how exactly will they do that without shutting off electricity and natural gas?
3) UN Agenda 21, a recipe for global governance in the name of saving the planet, states, “The implementation of the huge sustainable development programmes of Agenda 21 will require the provision to developing countries of substantial new and additional financial resources.”
That is …global taxation and redistribution.
Also, as far as anyone can tell, there was never a vote by the Board of Supervisors to go ahead with the HUD grant application. County Executive, Robert Tucker, signed it. And, that put the county on the hook for some matching funds by a convoluted schedule.
Carole Thorpe and Charles Battig of the Jefferson Area Tea Party have been leading the charge on this and deserve our greatest thanks and appreciation.
"UN Agenda 21": The little known United Nations strategy for forcing extreme changes in human behavior in order to save the planet.
"ICLEI": Local Governments for Sustainability. Albemarle County is a dues paying member and is using ICLEI software to track the citizens’ evil use of energy.
"TJPDC": Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission, a group receiving your hard-earned tax dollars to help implement this nonsense.
"Livable Communities": The new name for "Sustainable Development", after people started to understand exactly what "Sustainable Development" entailed.
This video is a great resource on the subject:
P.S. I spoke at a press conference on Thursday, June 2, alongside the Jefferson Area Tea Party. I have included my comments below.
“A wise and frugal Government, which shall retrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement…”
America was founded on this principle: The purpose of government is to protect our rights, including life, liberty, and property. As long as one’s actions do not cause harm to the person or property of another, we are free to live our lives as we see fit without government interference. When government expands beyond this limited role, it causes more harm than good. It is out of bounds when it attempts to solve society’s ills, and everything is completely turned upside down when government starts dictating citizens’ behavior. That is communism, not America.
“Sustainable development” is based on the idea that humans are destroying the planet, and the big push has been predicated on “global warming”.
But every pillar of the global warming alarmists’ claims has been debunked. All they have left are computer models that are, at their core, based on flawed assumptions, and they have been wrong over and over again. The Earth has been going through massive temperature swings for millions of years on a scale that dwarfs any of the anthropogenic theories. Mankind’s contribution can only be so tiny as to not be detected.
The best thing for the planet is for people to be prosperous and therefore have the means to properly take care of the earth. Prosperity is the child of freedom, free exchange, and free enterprise. Pollution and other ills occur more frequently when the humans are desperate, like what happens in places where there is little respect for private property. Just look at the environmental record in the Soviet Union, for goodness sake. If we continue on this path toward socialism, it will not be good for Planet Earth.
Many of us are busy living our lives and providing for our families. For a very long time, we have been disengaged from what has been happening in our government.
That is changing. People are starting to pay attention.
We see massive debt being incurred by our government that will decimate the future of our children and grandchildren, and much of it owed to foreign powers.
We see our freedoms being eroded rapidly, and we are taking notice.
The Orwellian measures being proposed under the banner of “sustainable development” are misguided and are contemptuous of the principles of liberty upon which this nation was founded.
We call on our elected representatives to reject any federal money for enacting these irresponsible and anti-freedom measures, break all ties with ICLEI, withdraw from the "U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement” and the "U.S. Cool Counties Stabilization Declaration", and jettison any participation in activities related to UN Agenda 21.
