Virginia Libertarians Call for Impeachment Over War in Libya
February 15, 2012
In its first quarter meeting, the State Central Committee (SCC) of the Libertarian Party of Virginia (LPVA) passed a resolution encouraging members of the House of Representatives from Virginia to propose and support an article of impeachment of Barack Obama for waging war in Libya without an act of Congress.
John Munchmeyer, LPVA member proposing the resolution, said, “He is not a king, but apparently he has assumed that position. In Afghanistan and Iraq, at least the Congress voted for the use of force. The war in Libya is different. Obama is saying that he does not need anything from the Congress.
“His action is an outrageous violation of the Constitution. It is bad enough that formal declarations of war are not being used, but this represents a fundamental shift and sets an extremely dangerous precedent. Without a remedy, in ten years presidents will routinely use the war in Libya as an example of why they don't need any input whatsoever from Congress for waging war. Our Founders very clearly and very wisely made it so that one man would not have such power.”
Here is the full text of the resolution:
"Whereas Barack Obama, who currently serves as President of the United States of America, has prosecuted a war in Libya without a declaration of war by the Congress of the United States of America and,
Whereas the Constitution of the United States of America specifically and only grants the power to declare war to the Congress,
We, the State Central Committee of the Libertarian Party of Virginia, encourage members of the House of Representatives from Virginia to propose and support an article of impeachment of Barack Obama."
